She is the daughter of actress Melissa Canaday and Edward James Hyland and the sister of actor Ian Hyland. Her father Edward James Hyland works as a theatre as well as a film actor, and her mother Melissa Canaday, who is a stage acting coach. She has been raised together with her younger brother, Ian Hyland who is also an actor just like her.
Hyland was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia as a young child and received a kidney transplant from her father in April 2012 and That kidney failed after few years, In September, 2017 leading to a second kidney transplant , donated by her younger brother, Ian. In December 2018 Self magazine article, Hyland said she had contemplated suicide because she felt she was a burden on her family and blamed herself for her body rejecting her father’s kidney. she has undergone 16 surgeries to improve her health, including numerous kidney surgeries and a laparoscopic surgery to treat her endometriosis.
